Before I post about what's on my mind today, I want to share that the Conservation Center for Art & Historic Artifacts (CCAHA) in Philadelphia is hosting an open house tomorrow. I was introduced to the CCAHA last November when I had them repair my dad's first edition copy of The Tower of Babel by Thomas Merton (with woodcuts by Gerhard Marcks, a noted Bauhaus artist) and published in 1957. They did a fabulous job, and the CCAHA is a pretty amazing place to visit. The projects they've completed are remarkable.

Anyway, the open house is happening to celebrate their 35 years of preserving the world's cultural heritage (hundreds of thousands of paper-based artifacts, including historic manuscripts, rare books, beautiful fine art, and fragile photographs). More information on the behind-the-scenes tour here.

Last but not least, I want to share with you this song by David Mallett (introduced to me by my dad :). You can watch Mallett perform it here.

It's called "Artist In Me." I believe we are all artists, in some form, somewhere inside.
Why do I fly why do I fall
It must be the artist in me
Guess it's just the artist in me
Why am I amazed at the wonder of it all
Guess it's just the artist in me

Why am I alone even when I'm in a crowd
It must be the artist in me
Guess it's just the artist in me

Why I make my livin' being lonely right out loud
Guess it's just the artist in me

Why do I live on coffee and wine
Why do I have to keep movin' all the time
How do I know that beauty will set me free
Why am I awake when the whole world is asleep
It must be the artist in me
Guess it's just the artist in me

People throw away all the things I keep
Guess it's just the artist in me

Why do I seek these universal truths
It must be the artist in me
Guess it's just the artist in me
Why do I still mourn all the heroes of my youth
Guess it's just the artist in me
Why do I live on coffee and wine
Why do I have to keep movin' all the time
How do I know that beauty will set me free
Why do I fly why do I fall It must be the artist in me
Guess it's just the artist in me

Why am I amazed at the wonder of it all
Guess it's just the artist in me

Why am I my best when I'm right down to a crawl
I guess it's just the artist in me.
Enjoy,

I love the uniqueness of your work. The simplicity of the composition is so pleasing to the eye, and the colors you use are just perfect. I can tell that you put your heart and soul into your paintings!

Hi Abbey,
We've not met except online but after reading your post today, I had to write. I too, am a daily painter living in Dixmont, Maine. The song you mentioned never fails to touch me deeply...for two reasons. The obvious is that I'm an artist. The other is that 24 years ago we bought our current home from Dave Mallett. Dave wrote a song about this old house called 'Good Times' on his Vital Signs LP. My son's bedroom was once Dave's "music room" and one where songs were written. It was then and continues to be a home filled with music.
Wishing you joy in painting and music!
Best,
Brenda
